The 2018 Hugo Nominated & Winning Stories Online

The 2018 Hugo Nominated & Winning Stories Online

Another year, another SFF awards season is well underway, as the Hugo Award finalists were announced earlier this month. Get a jump start on your award reading with all the 2018 Hugo nominated short stories and novelettes (and one lonely novella) available to read online right now.

Keep in mind that only supporting and attending members of Worldcon 76 (and members with equivalent voting rights) who join the convention before the end of final ballot voting will be eligible to vote on the final ballot. Makes sense! This year's Worldcon will be August 16-20 in San Jose, so you have until summer to get your read on and your membership happening. Hopefully having these 13 stories all in one place will help.

Now updated with the 2018 Hugo Award winners...

Beautiful Dreamer: A Poignant Sci-Fi Short Film for Mother's Day

Beautiful Dreamer: A Poignant Sci-Fi Short Film for Mother's Day

Ken Liu writes such beautifully touching sci-fi and fantasy. I dare you not to be moved by his short stories The Paper Menagerie, a multiple award-winning tale of a biracial boy in a Northeastern suburb whose paper menagerie comes to life with the magic of his mother's love, or Memories of My Mother, an incredibly poignant sci-fi tale of a dying mother who goes to great lengths to steal a few moments through the years in order to watch her daughter grow up.

With stories packing such an emotional punch, it's no surprise that filmmakers have adapted his work. Beautiful Dreamer is one such adaptation. Based on Memories of My Mother above, this 26-minute short captures all the love and heartache shared between a mother and daughter through the years that was so affecting (and, for me at least, emotionally devastating) in Liu's original flash fiction tale.

Take the time to read and watch them both this weekend — you'll only need half an hour. It'll be worth it, I promise.

Awards are fun, aren't they? And it's not just the glitz and glamour of, say, the Oscars or Golden Globes, seeing how excited we get for awards of all kinds — or maybe that's just me? At any rate, the Nebula Award nominees were announced last month, recognizing the best in science fiction and fantasy published in the United State as selected by SFWA members.

I was especially excited for this year's finalists, since I've actually read most of them already. Less reading to do before the awards are given out on May 19th! I hadn't read any of the short stories or novelettes, however. Thankfully, most of them can be found online. Because I care, here is every nominated short story, novelette, and novella you can read right now — for free...

10 Hugo Award Nominated Stories Online Right Now (2017)

If you don't know the Hugo Awards, they're kind of like the Oscars for sci-fi and fantasy (literally, as the idea was based on the Academy Awards). 2017's votes have been tallied and the winners were announced last Friday. Sad puppies only got sadder as all the amazing women who won rejoiced.

Amazing women like NK Jemisin, who won the Best Novel award for The Obelisk Gate, the second book in her apocalyptic fantasy trilogy that is the very essence of dope. She won this award last year too — making her the first black author to ever win it, and now she's won it two years in a row. I don't want to jinx anything for next year, but the third and final book in the trilogy, The Stone Sky, was released this week. I'm just saying.

Lots of other awesome people won lots of other awards as well. Check out the full list of winners here.

What I really love about the Hugos is how they recognize not just the novel format, but everything from fanzines to movies in the SFF genre. And, of course, short stories of all lengths. If you're like me and love a good short story, you're in luck — here are all of the 2017 Hugo Award winning and nominated short stories and novelettes that are online for you to read right now, totally free. You're welcome.

The Operative (Part 2)

The Operative (Part 2)

The Operative - Part 2: In which the vampire operative completes his assignment ● Urban Fantasy ● 850 words ● 3 minute read

Continued from Part 1 . . .

Another Operative had introduced him to the Hematic life many moons ago. Spoke of the power to be had by drinking in the blood upon which quintessence floated. Said it was like a direct hit of bliss, emotion and vibrant energy all pouring forth, no effort or volition required. Said it could quench the thirst, that unyielding, brutal thirst which vexed those of his kind.

Initially, he hadn’t believed such a thing possible. And it all seemed rather distasteful, besides. Initially, that is.

But, one long ago day when he was still young and mortal men fought hand-to-hand battles with swords and knives, he’d gotten a taste of the blood purely by accident. It had been exactly like a tiny shot of bliss. And the memories — the memories were even more thrilling than that...
