New Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books: October 23 - 29

New SFF Books October 24

With Halloween just around the corner, you'll find some horror in this week's new speculative fiction, from a collection of Joe Hill novellas and a ouija board anthology to the latest in the Anno Dracula series. If you love vampires like I do, this series sounds awesome and unique and worth checking out.

There's also quite a lot of fantasy this week — everything from urban fantasy to a historical fantasy of manners in a belle epoque world, to an unseasonably early contemporary paranormal reimagining of A Christmas Carol. (Why is Christmas trying to creep on Halloween's territory? Did no one learn from Jack Skellington?)

The only sci-fi to be found this week comes in the form of a gorgeously illustrated novel set in a snowy post-apocalyptic world. No, it's not Snowpiercer. Billed as a "stunning and cinematic combination of art and novel," this book would make a great gift for the lover of sci-fi art.

Check out this week's new sci-fi and fantasy books...

Above the Timberline

Gregory Manchess

Sci-Fi | Art

From renowned artist Gregory Manchess comes a lavishly painted novel about the son of a famed polar explorer searching for his stranded father, and a lost city buried under snow in an alternate future.

When it started to snow, it didn’t stop for 1,500 years. The Pole Shift that ancient climatologists talked about finally came, the topography was ripped apart and the weather of the world was changed—forever. Now the Earth is covered in snow, and to unknown depths in some places.

In this world, Wes Singleton leaves the academy in search of his father, the famed explorer Galen Singleton, who was searching for a lost city until Galen’s expedition was cut short after being sabotaged. But Wes believes his father is still alive somewhere above the timberline.

Fully illustrated with over 120 pieces of full-page artwork throughout, Above the Timberline is a stunning and cinematic combination of art and novel.

Blade of Empire

Dragon Prophecy #2

Mercedes Lackey & James Mallory

Fantasy

FROM THE AUTHORS OF NYT BESTSELLER WHEN DARKNESS FALLS, NYT BESTSELLER THE PHOENIX TRANSFORMED, AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER TO LIGHT A CANDLE

They thought the war was over. They were wrong.

Runacarendalur Caerthalien has been a master of battle for hundreds of years, but he found himself on the wrong side—the losing side—in the last war. Betrayed by his brother, trapped in a prophecy he does not understand, Runacar flees the battlefield.

Yet Runacar is no coward. In a twist he could never have imagined, the Elven War-Prince finds himself leading a new army into battle—a force of centaurs, merfolk, gryphons, minotaurs, and talking bears who can perform magic. For centuries they have been trying to reclaim their lands from Elven invaders. With Runacar at the helm, they just might manage it.

Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory’s first collaboration, the Obsidian Mountain trilogy, introduced readers to a brilliant, continent-spanning fantasy world of high adventure and epic battle. Civilization shimmered with magic while in the nooks and crannies of the world, dragons and unicorns hid from people who believed them to be nothing more than legends.

The Dragon Prophecy, set thousands of years before that story, illuminates a time when long-lived Elves rule the Fortunate Lands. It is a time of dire prophecy, of battle and bloodshed, of great magics unlike any the Elvenkind have seen before. It is the story of the end of one world and the beginning of the next.

Strange Weather

Joe Hill

Horror | Fantasy | Collection

A collection of four chilling novels, ingeniously wrought gems of terror from the brilliantly imaginative, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Fireman, Joe Hill.

"Snapshot" is the disturbing story of a Silicon Valley adolescent who finds himself threatened by "The Phoenician," a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that erases memories, snap by snap.

A young man takes to the skies to experience his first parachute jump. . . and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero’s island of roiling vapor that seems animated by a mind of its own in "Aloft."

On a seemingly ordinary day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails—splinters of bright crystal that shred the skin of anyone not safely under cover. "Rain" explores this escalating apocalyptic event, as the deluge of nails spreads out across the country and around the world.

In "Loaded," a mall security guard in a coastal Florida town courageously stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun rights movement. But under the glare of the spotlights, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. When an out-of-control summer blaze approaches the town, he will reach for the gun again and embark on one last day of reckoning.

Masterfully exploring classic literary themes through the prism of the supernatural, Strange Weather is a stellar collection from an artist who is "quite simply the best horror writer of our generation" (Michael Kortya).
