New Sci-Fi & Fantasy Books: September 11-16

NewSFFBooksSep12.jpg

Dude. There's so much diversity in this week's new sci-fi and fantasy book releases, I can't even. It's just pretty exciting to scroll through a list of a dozen new SFF books and see multiple covers featuring people of color, with multiple synopses featuring underrepresented cultures, with multiple authors of color represented.

Beyond diversity, there's just a lot of cool stuff for the SFF reader this week. You've got dragons and jinn and aliens and missions to space. A dystopian look at China's One Child Policy. Hackers in a futuristic video game world. A K-drama + Pacific Rim mash-up. And, of course, magic, from a James Bond-like fantasy based on real-world magical order The Golden Dawn (with a punny title that I love) to a very cool magical world that takes on oppression and racism.

Here's what's new in speculative fiction this week...

Before She Ignites
(Fallen Isles #1)

Jodi Meadows
YA | Fantasy | Dragons

From the New York Times bestselling co-author of My Lady Jane comes a smoldering new fantasy trilogy perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard and Kristin Cashore about a girl condemned for defending dragons and the inner fire that may be her only chance of escape.

Mira has always been a symbol of hope for the Fallen Isles, perfect and beautiful—or at least that’s how she’s forced to appear. But when she uncovers a dangerous secret, Mira is betrayed by those closest to her and sentenced to the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles.

Except Mira is over being a pawn. Fighting to survive against outer threats and inner demons of mental illness, Mira must find her inner fire and the scorching truth about her own endangered magic—before her very world collapses.

And that’s all before she ignites.

An Excess Male

Maggie Shen King
Sci-Fi | Dystopian

From debut author Maggie Shen King, An Excess Male is the chilling dystopian tale of politics, inequality, marriage, love, and rebellion, set in a near-future China, that further explores the themes of the classics The Handmaid's Tale and When She Woke.

Under the One Child Policy, everyone plotted to have a son.

Now 40 million of them can't find wives.

Wei-guo holds fast to the belief that as long as he continues to improve himself, his small business, and in turn, his country, his chance at love will come. He finally saves up the dowry required to enter matchmaking talks at the lowest rung as a third husband—the maximum allowed by law. Only a single family—one harboring an illegal spouse—shows interest, yet with May-ling and her two husbands, Wei-guo feels seen, heard, and connected to like never before. But everyone and everything—walls, streetlights, garbage cans—are listening, and men, excess or not, are dispensable to the State. Wei-guo must reach a new understanding of patriotism and test the limits of his love and his resolve in order to save himself and this family he has come to hold dear.

In Maggie Shen King’s startling and beautiful debut, An Excess Male looks to explore the intersection of marriage, family, gender, and state in an all-too-plausible future.

Landscape With Invisible Hand

M.T. Anderson
YA | Sci-Fi | Aliens

National Book Award winner M. T. Anderson returns to future Earth in a sharply wrought satire of art and truth in the midst of colonization.

When the vuvv first landed, it came as a surprise to aspiring artist Adam and the rest of planet Earth — but not necessarily an unwelcome one. Can it really be called an invasion when the vuvv generously offered free advanced technology and cures for every illness imaginable? As it turns out, yes. With his parents’ jobs replaced by alien tech and no money for food, clean water, or the vuvv’s miraculous medicine, Adam and his girlfriend, Chloe, have to get creative to survive. And since the vuvv crave anything they deem classic Earth culture (doo-wop music, still life paintings of fruit, true love), recording 1950s-style dates for the vuvv to watch in a pay-per-minute format seems like a brilliant idea. But it’s hard for Adam and Chloe to sell true love when they hate each other more with every passing episode. Soon enough, Adam must decide how far he’s willing to go — and what he’s willing to sacrifice — to give the vuvv what they want.

★ Weekly Pick: With so many dope sounding stories getting so much really great buzz (just look how many starred reviews there are this week!), it's hard to choose just one book. But I'm going with Daniel José Older's Shadowhouse Fall (along with the whole Shadowshaper series), because this series sounds amazing and I believe that fantastical fiction is at its best when it tackles real-world issues especially when it does so in a fun but thought-provoking way.
